Old Post:

We had heard on the Manilva grapevine (and there’s lot of them here!) that Billy’s Fish and Chips in Duquesa port had been taken over by new owners and was much improved. Previously, in my opinion only, of course, the fish and chips from Billys were not great – we had fish and chips from there once, and never went back!!

However… what a difference! The place was immaculately clean – always a good sign – and everything is cooked to order, none of the cook it and keep it warm option that is used by other places. My husband ordered Cod and chips (with curry sauce!!) and I had the cod goujons with chips. The new owner, Tim, took the prepared fish from the fridge, battered it and cooked it in front of us. Chips were cooked the same way (although not battered of course!!). Even the presentation of a takeaway was great – chips underneath, plenty of salt and vinegar, fish arranged on top with a wedge of lemon – in my view, it’s these little touches that make a difference.
Well, the proof is in the eating and it was delicious. The portions are very generous too – lets just say our cats had a feast too!! Prices were very reasonable, both fish dishes were €6 each with regular chips at €2 or large chips at €3. There is everything on the menu you would expect to find, battered sausage, pies etc plus a few new ones such as homemade cod and parsley fishcakes.

Billy’s (now Tim’s) fish and chips can be found at the top level of Duquesa port.  If you hanker for a bit of English fayre, give it or try – you won’t be disappointed.

I, for one, will certainly be going back….. bang goes the diet again!!!
