The town of Manilva was virtually cut off this morning as police closed two of the three access roads in response to yet another fire, this time near the entrance to Manilva town. It was all calm in Sabinillas and we could see no smoke or hear sirens or anything. My daughter called me to say that there was no electricity or water at home – not completely unusual, however she called back 5 minutes later to say that the terrace was suddenly covered in black ash and there was a strong smell of smoke. My kids, along with most of the inhabitants of Manilva decided to investigate and discovered a large fire just off the Manilva roundabout. By this time, we could see the fire helicopter circling above Sabinillas, collecting water from what looked like the lake on Doña Julia Golf course and returning to Manilva.
After about an hour, all went quiet and the kids reported that it was under control and almost out. Looks like we may have lost some of the famous Manilva vineyards though… I’ll find out more when I get home…
