La Duquesa – Why Live there?

Why Duquesa?

La Duquesa, (The Duchess) is one of the most special spots on the Costa del Sol. What makes this area so unique is its great diversity, offering something for everyone. Moreover, its central location makes it extremely attractive to families wishing to relocate to Spain as it is within close vicinity of three international airports; Gibraltar (25 mins), Malaga (1 hour) and Jerez (1hr30 mins).

Duquesa makes up part of the Manilva region. It stretches from the coast to the rolling hills directly behind it. The heart of Duquesa is its Marina, with its boating facilities and many shops and restaurants boasting a variety of international cuisine including Chinese, Indian, Italian and typical Spanish cuisine. The Marina is sandwiched between unspoiled Manilva blue flag beaches. For those who are not tempted by sun, sea, and food, Duquesa also has a beautiful 18 hole golf course at its doorstep.

Is Duquesa for you?

Duquesa is ideal for families wishing to be relatively close (about 20-minute drive) to the livelier Puerto Banus and Marbella but not right in the heart of it. It is also within the commuter zone for people wishing to work in Gibraltar (25 minute drive away). La Duquesa is a great spot for a high-quality family lifestyle and whilst Duquesa has a large British population, the Spanish villages of Manilva, Sabinillas and Castillo are all within walking distance and enable the more adventurous to integrate with the Spanish. Living or holidaying in Duquesa enables the British expatriate to enjoy and submerge themselves in Spanish culture whilst also being able to turn back to traditional British comforts (e.g. fish and chips) from time to time.

Duquesa is family-friendly as walking or cycling along with the port or even the nearby promenade in Sabinillas makes for an ideal family outing. There are kids’ parks on either side of the Sabinillas promenade and outdoor exercise machines for those adults who want to keep fit. For couples without children, a walk along the beach at sunrise or sunset can make an idyllic setting. The numerous chiringuitos (beach bars) with traditional Spanish fish dishes make perfect places to stop and have a lovely meal. The atmosphere is relaxed and children are welcome everywhere.

The town hall of Manilva hosts numerous subsidised family events such as Halloween parties, entertainment through the Summer, shows, fairs, etc. Again these are excellent for those wishing to enjoy Spanish and British cultures; families will be able to celebrate many a British occasion such as St George´s Day to Spanish traditions such as the Vendimia and La fiesta de San Juan.

There are numerous additional activities which are well subsidised by the government which adults and children alike can enjoy ranging from Spanish dancing to IT lessons.
