Estepona is a municipality located in the province of Malaga, on the Costa del Sol and lies in the autonomous region of Andalucia, Spain. It is known best for its old town, cobbled streets and Estepona Marina. It boasts lovely beaches. They stretch across 21km of coastline. This runs from the West of the main centre to East of Estepona until you get to Guadalmina and San Pedro.
It is estimated that the population in 2019 is 70,000 inhabitants. The name Estepona is thought to be of Moorish descent, coming from the Arabic, Astabbuna or Al-extebunna.
Weather in Estepona

The municipality covers a number of distinct areas – each of them offering something different. If planning to purchase a property in Estepona, it is good to explore these different areas. The main areas include Estepona Town, Estepona Marina, East Estepona and West Estepona.
Estepona Old Town
The Old Town (Casco antiguo) is a vibrant, traditional Spanish seaside town. The centre has cobbled streets and there are some lovely typical Spanish plazas (squares). One of these squares is the Plaza de Las Flores. This is a beautiful, typical Andalucian style, square in the historic centre, with a central fountain, surrounded by flowers. The square has a number of traditional restaurants, bars and an ice cream parlour. This square is home to the Casa de Cultura, called ‘Casa de Las Tejerinas’. This building houses small exhibitions such as the Colección Garó. It is also home to the local tourist office. The centre of the town is a maze of narrow Andalucian style streets with lots of colourful plants and flowers. This is a special spot at Christmas. The Estepona town hall light up the town, creating a festive atmosphere.
Shopping in Estepona Centre
The Main Street or Calle Real runs through the centre – it is pedestrianised and has a number of shops and boutiques. There is a great variety of shops. There are modern stores like Mango and some more traditional fashion boutiques, haberdasheries, and small businesses.

The Orchid House / Orchidarium
Another highlight in the centre of town is The Orchid House. The Orchidarium is a museum of orchids. The building has three distinctive glass domes. Visitors can walk through this space and enjoy the surroundings which include a lake, a waterfall and over 1300 species of orchids.
Estepona Marina (Estepona Port)
Estepona Marina is near the town centre. You can walk from the town centre to the Marina along the promenade. The Estepona promenade goes from one end of the town to the other and is a lovely stretch with parks, beach bars and restaurants. On the West end of the promenade is the Marina.
The Marina has 447 moorings of up to 35m in length. It is a beautiful setting and attracts many tourists. Sundays are particularly popular as there is a vibrant, Sunday Market. The Marina has a number of restaurants offering a great variety of cuisine. From Thai food to traditional Spanish cuisine, there is lots to pick from.
There is an ‘Opencor’ supermarket in the port. This is good to know as it is one of the only supermarkets that opens 365 days a week for 18 hours a day. It is the go to place if you need emergency supplies on a Sunday or on national holiday.

West Estepona is the area between Casares and Estepona Centre. This is a beautiful, unspoilt area with stunning beaches and coastline. There are a number of urbanisations that lie within this area. There are older established urbanisations such as Bahia Dorada and Buenas Noches. West Estepona is also home to some beautiful golf courses such as Estepona Golf and Valle Romano Golf Club. West Estepona has seen a lot of growth over the last three years. It is home to the new public hospital on the Costa del Sol, due to open at the end of the year. The area around the new hospital site has become a hub of activity. There is a school, Juan veintitres and commercial area that is beginning to expand. It has a Mercadona, Chemist, Aldi, Burger King, Sushi Restaurant and these offerings are increasing everyday.
